Jakieś dłonie łagodnie ujęły mój lewy łokieć i nagle znalazłam się w upragnionym cieniu.
– Czysta, proszę siadać.
Ufając obcym dłoniom dosyć gwałtownie usiadłam na twardej ławce. Wystarczyło kilka chwil by pobyt w cieniu znacznie pomógł moim oczom. W końcu dokładnie obejrzałam mojego przypadkowego opiekuna. Okazał się nim starszy pan w typie świętego Mikołaja. Wyblakłe, błękitne oczy patrzyły na mnie z dużą dozą życzliwości.
– Cokolwiek spowodowało te łzy, nie warto.
Machnął sugestywnie dłonią i przesłał mi szczery uśmiech.
– Nic się nie stało, to tylko reakcja na ostre światło. Zapomniałam okularów, a wiatr i słońce zrobiło swoje.
Starszy pan przesłał mi swój kolejny szczery uśmiech.
– A widzi pani, jak to się można pomylić? Patrzę i co widzę? Idzie zapłakana kobieta, świata nie widzi przez łzy, to pomyślałem, że kto wie, czy nie wejdzie pod jakieś auto, jak taka zrozpaczona.
Zaczął się głośno śmiać, tak głośno i tak szczerze, że szybko do niego dołączyłam. Gdy zamilkł nasz śmiech, podziękowałam mu za bezinteresowną troskę.
– Pani mi tak nie dziękuję, bo to odruch był. Nigdy nie potrafiłem przejść obojętnie obok płaczącej kobiety. Jak moja żona zalewała się łzami, to świat bym podpalił, że te łzy zniknęły. Córka od zawsze umiała mną tak zakręcić jak chciała, wystarczyły tylko jej szkliste oczka. A wnuczki… Cóż, że stary, nie znaczy, że mądry, tylko doświadczony, więc i one mogą wszystko na mnie wymóc jedną łezką. Taki ze mnie twardy dziadek.
Słuchając starszego pana nie zauważyłam, że u naszych stóp pojawiło się spore stado gołębi. Nieznajomy zauważył moje zdziwienie.
– Zaraz coś pani pokażę.
Przyłożył dłoń do swojej twarzy i zagwizdał przeciągle. W ciągu kilkunastu sekund otoczyło nas morze gołębi. Ptaki siadały na ramionach starszego pana, na jego wyciągniętych przed siebie dłoniach. Jeszcze nigdy nie widziałam tylu gołębi w jednej chmarze na deptaku. Ptaki były spokojne, ufne. Nieznajomy wyciągnął z kieszeni zimowej kurtki jakieś ziarna, którymi obficie je częstował.
– Przychodzę w to miejsce od ponad dwudziestu lat. Znam je wszystkie. Proszę zobaczyć, ten miał złamaną nóżkę, tamten skrzydła, a ten mizerny stracił w ubiegłym roku jedno oko. Gdy trzeba zabieram ranne ptaki do weterynarza i leczę tak długo, dopóki nie mam pewności, że nadszedł czas powrotu do ich chmary. Ptaki muszę mieć niebo, a niebo ptaki.
Siedziałam w milczeniu słuchając człowieka, który z wielką miłością opowiadał o swoich podopiecznych. Jego wyblakłe od długiego życia oczy odzyskały swój blask.

Ptaki muszą mieć niebo, a niebo ptaki. To zdanie utkwiło na dobre w mojej głowie. Istnienie życzliwych, bezinteresownie życzliwych, ludzi sprawia, że mam ochotę ciągle patrzeć z uśmiechem w niebo.
